Guns are fun, but also bad. Like alcohol.

I’m on the fence. In any case, I should get my PAL or RPAL eventually.

If you’re a die hard fan of good iron sights (like I am), this seems like a great buy. I haven’t payed much attention to gun prices lately, last I did was pre-trump and all semi-auto rifles held their value pretty aggressively giving  used purchases little advantage over buying new for just a little more. So I'm not really sure what this will go for. I'd assume less, but people also go nuts for Ruger.

If you purchase that rifle, you’ll find out that its no tack driver. Ruger Mini-14s made up until 2008 had thin ‘pencil’ barrels. You’ll find if you take it out to the range that your groupings will open up by the 4th or 5th round as the barrel warms up. You’ll also find a ‘flyer’ every once in awhile. The barrel is just too thin to shoot better than about 3-4 MOA. There are fixes out there if you have your heart set on this particular specimen and want to tighten up those groups. Like this: https://sunfloweroutdoorsports.com/MO-ROD-MO-REAPER_c74.htm

The newer guns (580 series and up) have a thicker tapered barrel which pretty much takes care of the accuracy problem. They still aren’t as accurate as an AR15 can be, but if you are in California, you may just have to live with that .

I’m not knocking your choice at all. In fact I purchased a very similar gun just a couple weeks ago. It was an itch that needed scratching. I’ve been wanting a vintage Ruger GB model and this fit the bill.  This was it.

Can you tell me how to spot the newer, more accurate builds?

My cousin has a licensed, full-auto AR-15 and a way to shoot .22 LR and that's fun. And the savings add up.

AR-15 is objectively a better rifle, and probably cheaper too. More accurate, more available parts, easier to disassemble/reassemble and modify. Magazines are more readily available.

BUT if you still want one, go for it. Just stick with a 2008+ model (which that is not) .

My friend owned one. They are okay but nothing spectacular. I felt the build quality left something to be desired. If you do pick one up I  h ighly reccomend installing an accu strut.

If this is one of those stupid rotary magazine .22 jobbies then no. Fuck no. I spent a couple of afternoons with one a decade or two ago picking bent rounds out of a magazine throat... repeatedly. Brno or get the fuck out.

I hear you, but I really don’t want an AR. For one, they’re ubiquitous. For another, the the M-14 and M-1 Garand have always, always been my favorite rifles. The Mini-14 is simply less offensive looking to the gun grabbers. As a utility, and in a pinch, I think the Mini-14 ought to be plenty adequate and, I believe, can use the military’s 5.56mm ammo if need be.

Yes, says I.

However, I have recently been bitten by the levergun bug and have need of a Marlin SBL.

If I lived in the US and was in the market for a Mini-14, I would first find a folding stock, stainless version. Then get myself a big ass cigar and be pleased on how my plan came together.

That’s an interesting quip. Personally, I want the traditional version, nylon, mind you, because traditional. And being a Californian, I don’t want to be tarred as the owner of an ASS ault rifle. Besides, the bullet will travel just a fast out of either version.

yes, but IIRC the Mini-14 does not  have a hard chrome-lined barrel, so you’d want to avoid the cheap steel ammo unless you absolutely have no other option.

I have a mini and an AR. Minis rock! Don’t let anyone talk you into an AR if you want a Mini. They have their quirks, but they’re sure fun to shoot. That being said this one is in 223, you’ll want a new one in 556. They’re more accurate . It’s true that you can throw 556 in a 223 mini in a pinch but it will be hard on the gun. Also, the sights on the new ones are way better.

Haha, sorry, I excel at making bad jokes. I thought it was obvious enough though, perhaps I should have added that I will never hit anything I'm shooting at and that I'll call in Murdock and Face for the getaway.
